Gift With Purchase: ideas and new tactics

Multiple gift tiers in carousel format, non-stacking rules, scalable gifts, hidden rewards, and subscription-only gifts.

Gift with Purchase can do a lot more than add a single free item. These setups are ideal for a Q4 sale, but they work all year round. Everything here is configured in your cart, inside your Add to Unlock and Gift with Purchase rewards.

1. Offer multiple gift tiers (in carousel format)

You can add several Gift with Purchase rewards to one progress bar and let customers carousel through them, instead of squishing them all into a row. This is perfect for multiple spend tiers, and it encourages customers to keep spending to unlock the next gift.

How to set it up:

  1. In your Add to Unlock block, add each gift as its own reward tier, with its own spend threshold.

  2. Open the information box styling and set the layout to Carousel. (Your other options are grid and inline.) Carousel lets customers swipe through every gift and its info box without them crowding each other, which is a much nicer experience.

  3. You can have up to five gifts per progress bar. Any more starts to feel crowded, even with the carousel.

Tip: Need more than five tiers? Stack two Add to Unlock blocks, one above the other. For example, the first covers $100 to $500 and the second covers $600 to $1,000, giving you up to ten gifts in total.

2. Choose whether gifts stack

Decide whether a customer receives every gift they've unlocked, or just one per order. One-per-order defaults to the highest-value gift they've reached, and it's the setting to use when giving away multiple gifts wouldn't be profitable.

How to set it up:

  1. Open your Gift with Purchase reward and find the stacking options.

  2. To let customers keep every gift they unlock, leave auto-remove product if the customer qualifies for a higher tier gift unchecked. This suits low-cost gifts you're happy to give in full.

  3. To give only one gift per order, check that box. When a customer unlocks a higher tier, the lower-tier gift is automatically removed from the cart.

  4. A default message appears when a gift is removed ("This gift has been removed from cart as a higher value gift has been unlocked"). Edit it to whatever you like, for example "Only one gift per order."

Tip: If profitability is your priority, keep gifts non-stacking. If your gift costs are low, stacking lets people happily collect them as they go.

3. Stop customers removing or editing gifts

Gifts are added to the cart automatically, but customers can still remove them or change the quantity. If you want to guarantee the gift goes out with the order, you can lock it.

How to set it up:

  1. In your Gift with Purchase reward, check prevent product quantity edits or removals.

  2. The gift now stays in the cart and can't be deleted or adjusted by the customer.

Why this helps: Brands often get support messages asking why an order didn't include its gift. The order logs usually show the customer removed it manually. This setting prevents that from happening.

4. Scale a gift with quantity (Scalable Gifts)

For cart quantity gifts (buy one, get a gift), you can now let the gift apply multiple times and scale with the order. This is a new feature, and it's only available with cart quantity, not cart value.

How to set it up:

  1. Set up a Gift with Purchase with a cart quantity trigger, such as buy one get one.

  2. Check the box to allow the gift to apply multiple times per order.

  3. Unicorn shows you a preview of how it scales. Buy one get one becomes buy two get two. Buy two get one free becomes buy four get two free.

This is ideal when you want a gift to pair with each unit a customer buys, and to scale up as they add more.

5. Hide the progress bar for a hidden gift

A gift tied to specific products can confuse shoppers who have other items in their cart and see a message about a free gift. You don't have to show the progress bar at all, and hiding it keeps the cart clean.

How to set it up:

  1. In your Add to Unlock reward, drag the progress bar size to zero. The bar disappears.

  2. To make it a completely hidden reward, remove the text and make sure the information box isn't showing.

  3. The gift still works exactly as normal. It just adds silently, with no progress bar or info box in the cart.

This is great for premium brands, or when you have several product-specific gifts that would otherwise make the cart look busy. It works best with cart quantity gifts, where the customer has already added the qualifying item, so the gift can appear straight away with nothing more for them to do.

6. Reward subscriptions with a subscription-only gift

If you offer subscriptions, the peak period is a great time to grow subscribers with a gift that only applies to subscription items. It's a strong alternative to heavy discounting, and it builds lifetime value rather than giving margin away.

How to set it up:

  1. In your Gift with Purchase reward, set the purchase type to Subscription. Customers then unlock the gift only by buying a subscription item.

  2. The gift applies only to that subscription item.

  3. Advertise it in the cart with a media banner so customers know it's on offer.

Tip: This is a lovely way to reward first-time subscription orders and lift lifetime value, especially if you'd rather not run big discounts this year.
