This happens when you use the [price] tag to show the value of the gift on a $0 products but they don't have a compare at price.
If you add in the RRPs into the compare at price field on the free gift product and then re-add the products into the free gifts, then the [price] tag should work as expected!
Make sure your free product is 'unlisted'.
